Book AppointmentWhy Regular Eye Exams Matter
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends low-risk adults have an eye exam:
- Every 2 to 3 years between ages 20–39
- Every 2 years between ages 40–64
- Annually from age 65
Patients who wear contacts, have a very high prescription, have a vision condition, or live with other medical conditions like diabetes may need more frequent exams as recommended by their optometrist. We will work with you to determine a schedule.
What to Expect During Your Eye Exam
During your eye exam, we’ll check your overall vision and eye health. We pride ourselves on being education-focused and encourage our patients to ask us any questions they have during their exams.
Most exams include eye dilation, where drops widen your pupils for a better view of your eye to help us achieve accurate results. Dilation makes your eyes light-sensitive, so we recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging for someone to drive you home after your appointment.
We may use various tools and techniques to help detect potential signs of eye conditions.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique that helps us gather details about the back of the eye, including the retina. OCT technology uses light waves to create 3D images that show layers of the retina and optic nerve, helping us detect changes to tissue over time.
OCT images can help us identify conditions that impact the retina and optic nerve, including diabetic eye disease or glaucoma.
Visual Field Test
Perimetry (visual field test) measures all areas of your eyesight, including your peripheral (side) vision. The information helps us identify blind spots or loss of vision.
Perimetry is a standard tool for detecting glaucoma, which can cause gradual and permanent vision loss, typically starting with side vision.
Optos Optomap
Our Optomap imaging system helps provide us with a comprehensive view of your retina, capturing crucial details that traditional methods may miss.
This advanced technology allows us to:
- Detect early signs of disease: Identify potential issues like diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and glaucoma in their earliest stages.
- Monitor disease progression: Track changes in your retinal health over time and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
- Enhance diagnostic accuracy: Provide detailed images for precise diagnosis and treatment planning.
